Clear Vision Research Sweeps Up at NIF 2019

The ACT New Investigator Forum (NIF), organised annually by the Australian Society for Medical Research (ASMR), provided a fun and interesting day for the Medical Research community in Canberra last week. This small conference, located at the John Curtin School of Medical Research, provides a platform for early career researchers to present their projects and data through either a poster or an oral presentation with the opportunity to network with other researchers as well as win great prizes.

I was lucky enough this year to be on the organising committee as secretary, where I was heavily involved in the details of the event with six other members. My roles included organising the keynote speakers including the Minister for Health Meegan Fitzharris, finding judges and making sure everything ran smoothly on the day.

Adrian Cioanca won Best Oral Presentation of the day.

The Clear Vision Research group was very well represented on the day with Yvette and Adrian presenting their data as an oral presentation and Nilisha, Josh and Shannon all presenting a poster, and participating as talk or poster judges. Our lab also made up half of the winners on the day with Adrian taking out the prize for Best Oral Presentation and Shannon coming runner up for the Best Poster Presentation.

The day concluded with a Sundowner Event which is an opportunity for attendees to network in a more relaxed environment. We heard from two more keynote speakers, including the Executive Dean of the Faculty of Health at the University of Canberra, Michelle Lincoln and Phil Dooley, the National vice-president of Australian Science Communicators, who both gave motivating and entertaining talks about the paths of science we can take with our medical research degrees.

A great day was had by all and we look forward to representing the Clear Vision Research Group again at NIF 2020!
